New Houses for Little Blues
Nest boxes provide a lovely safe environment for little blues to incubate their eggs and raise their chicks. They’re a better defense against inquisitive predators and can’t be caved in by being trampled on as some natural burrows can be.
A recent production line saw 12 sparkling new nest boxes completed for deployment along our nearby bays and beaches. With assistance from our local DOC marine ranger they were safely delivered ready to be dug in for the penguins. It sure saved a lot of heavy hiking to have them cruise in by boat!
It may take some time before the wee houses are adopted by penguin couples but when they are the little blues will be very loyal to them year after year.
Our sincere thanks to Tasman Environmental Trust for supplying the plywood and to DOC for helping to make this deployment so much easier!
