Conservation Week - Big Beach Clean Up

Despite the showers, hardy Kaiteriteri locals donned their wet weather gear for a community multi-beach clean up encompassing several bays north and south of the main Kaiteri beach.

In no time bags were filled with all sorts of rubbish, from the predictable bottles and cans, tear tabs, condoms, bottle tops, confectionary wrappers, doggy poo bags, plastic straws and containers, baby nappies, to children’s pyjamas, a variety of single shoes, beach towels and various marine flotsam and jetsam.

It’s estimated that approx 80-90kg of rubbish was collected.

The event was organised by the Tasman Bay Blue Penguin Trust to celebrate Conservation Week. "Making our local beach environment safer for our little blues and other native species helps prevent ingestion of litter pieces and injury" says Linda Jenkins, Trustee. "The volunteers did an amazing job in more-than-slightly inclement conditions.  Legends!"

The Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve supported the community by providing rubbish bags, sorting bench and disposal of recyclables and rubbish.  Massive thanks!
